Job Summary:
Connecticut Public Radio seeks an exceptionally creative and ambitious Reporting Fellow to work in the Connecticut Public Radio newsroom as part of Guns & America, a groundbreaking new collaborative reporting project focused on the role of guns in American life. The Reporting Fellow will participate as a member of an inaugural cohort of a two-year Audion Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind professional development opportunity for early- to mid-career journalists, designed to grow and strengthen public media’s pool of talented, cross-platform journalists.
The Audion Fellow at Connecticut Public Radio will build a new beat reporting on the many ways we, in the State of Connecticut interact with guns, creating empathetic, surprising journalism about this divisive issue. As one of 10 Audion Fellows reporting for the Guns & America collaborative from partner stations across the U.S, the Connecticut Public radio Fellow will be employed by Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc. and will work every day with the Guns & America lead editing team in Washington, D.C. A member of the Connecticut Public radio newsroom, the Fellow will also work with newsroom leadership.
The highly competitive Audion Fellowship offers cutting-edge training on digital innovation, investigative reporting techniques, and audio storytelling. Fellows will also come together for twice-yearly, week-long professional development seminars, to be held in various cities throughout the country. Because of the full commitment required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position, Fellows may not be employed elsewhere or engaged in full-time study outside of training offered under the terms of the Audion Fellowship and the employment policies of Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc.

Responsibilities:
• (35%) Develop and own a new beat reporting on the role of guns in American life.
Regularly create engaging multimedia stories from reporting, interviews, data and
analysis. Bring a distinctive style and approach and find new ways to report on an old
issue, striving for greatest impact with deepest substance.
• (20%) Work as part of a team to build expertise, contribute compelling story ideas,
experiment with innovative storytelling techniques, and work with lead editing team to
create a new project from the ground up.
• (15%) Create and tend a community around the beat, both locally and nationally.
Participate in both real-life and social media events.
• (10%) Engage in innovative professional development experiences developed by the
Audion Fellowship, including twice-yearly week-long meetups, monthly seminars and
embed opportunities.
• (20%) Produce daily news when needed, assist with on-air duties, participate in on-air
fundraising campaigns, and contribute to social media and digital platforms.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
1. At least three years of professional journalism experience, exemplary journalistic ethics,
and proven research, writing, and reporting skills.
2. Undergraduate degree in journalism or related field.
3. Ability to participate in professional development opportunities organized by lead station.
4. Experience building a beat, developing topical expertise and bringing a fresh perspective
to vital issues, prioritizing impact.
5. Willingness to experiment with storytelling methods and to adapt to changing platforms
and audience needs.
6. Agility to shift journalistic modes quickly and nimbly: from deadline reporting to
developing explainers; from deep investigative work to producing live events.
7. Ability to work within a diverse team with varying perspectives, ideas and life experience.
8. Experience building audiences and communities online, and using connections made
within an online community for reporting.
9. A commitment to cooperation, teamwork, curiosity, and diversity.
10. Ability to commit to two years with Connecticut Public Radio, starting on August 6, 2018,
to focus on reporting on guns.
11. A U.S. citizen
Preferred Qualifications
1. Graduate degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
2. Knowledge of Connecticut.
3. Experience with one or more of the following: multimedia production, particularly
photography or video; hands-on audio editing and innovative audio storytelling; working
with one or more content management systems; other relevant technical expertise.
